An ApplicationRaising good kids is hard. (Certainly not impossible, but it takes a lot of work.) Judah had 3 sons and at least 2 of them were so bad God killed them. Judah either didn't realize why they died or was in denial. He may have even blamed Tamar (GE 38:11). The bravery of Tamar was of Biblical proportions. Not that she had any good alternatives.

Connect the DotsThis story is included in the middle of the explanation of Joseph's time in slavery. Since it's an embarrassment, it may not have been recorded if Perez had not ended up in the lineage of Jesus (MT 1:3, LK 3:33). While Moses wouldn't have known that, God would. We don't read any more about Perez except that he had many descendants (two clans named in NUM 26:20-21) whom the original audience of scriptures would surely recognize. / Compare GE 38:8 to DT 25:5-6, codified 400 years later.
